Garage Door Manual Lock Repair: what to note first

Garage Doors · Toronto, Ontario

Technician in a cap and safety glasses fitting a paneled garage-door section against the track hinges, with a drill on the floor.

The T-shaped handle on the outside turns a full quarter, exactly as it has for twenty years, but nothing moves behind it. No clunk from the bars, no click at the tracks. The handle has stopped talking to the lock.

Worth answering before the call

Do you have a key for the lock, and how many keys would you like? Does the door close fully to the floor and sit level? Is the door steel, wood or aluminum, and roughly how old is it?

The handle turns but the bars stay put. What has broken?

Something in the short chain between the handle and the bars. The square spindle may have twisted or sheared, the set screw holding the inside knob may have let it spin free, the cam inside the centre body may have worn round, or the return spring may have snapped. The inside cover comes off to see which, and the failed part or the whole mechanism is replaced to suit.

I have no key for the outside handle. Can it be made to work?

Yes. The cylinder is removed and either rekeyed to a fresh combination, so any key held by a previous owner is retired, or replaced with a new cylinder carrying the correct tailpiece. New keys are cut and tested in the handle before the technician leaves. If a locked door has to be opened first, the technician confirms your connection to the property as a matter of course.
